APA Costa dos Corais Marine
PERNAMBUCO – ALAGOAS
Protecting our coastline
Created in 1997, the APA Costa dos Corais (APACC) covers the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, being the largest federal marine conservation unit, with around 413 thousand hectares. Costa dos Corais comprises the main tourist region of Alagoas, inducing all the historical development of tourism in the state, especially since it encompasses the capital of Alagoas.
Therefore, APACC management faces the challenge of controlling public use, ensuring that visitation generates the least possible impact on the environment, being carried out from the perspective of social responsibility and sustainability. The project consisted of the elaboration of a tourist, economic and legal diagnosis with the objective of contributing to the improvement of UC management through the strengthening of existing public-private partnerships, as well as proposing new models. Aiming at increasing the management and conservation of biodiversity in the protected area, in addition to generating economic and social benefits for the region.
The study contemplates the analysis in four of the eleven municipalities covered by APACC: Paripueira, São Miguel dos Milagres, Porto de Pedras and Maragogi. The first is 36 km from the center of Maceió and due to its proximity, it is considered a summer area. São Miguel dos Milagres maintains a rural aspect and stands out as one of the most charming accommodation circuits in Brazil. Porto de Pedras and Maragogi have great scenic beauty, the latter being endowed with considerable tourist infrastructure.
Aspects of the social and economic dynamics of the municipalities were studied and analyzed, including an extensive assessment of the tourist landscape in the region. The field analyzes and the Unit’s Management Plan provided different bases for analysis, resulting in a diagnosis where it is possible to list the activities of public use, as well as the challenges, potentialities and tourist profiles that occurred in each municipality.
To enhance the characteristics and qualities of each municipality, a series of activities for public use and sustainable actions were identified with the objective of attracting new visitors to the region and also increasing the local economy. The activities were concentrated in an organized matrix in the several identified segments: box office, mangrove activities, beach activities and nautical activities. The prioritization of potential tourist activities in each municipality was defined, as well as their order of implementation.
