Mercado Público Municipal
COTIA – SÃO PAULO
Structuring the public market and surroundings
Spaces for meeting and experiencing, the municipal markets stand out as a setting for various forms of cultural expression in a given region. They have the potential to attract consumers and tourists interested in tasting exotic flavors and traditional popular dishes, in addition to the experience of a peculiar public space with different social and cultural contexts, which provide options for coexistence, cultural experience and leisure for people.
The work aims to develop a study of opportunities and potentialities for the implantation of a Municipal Public Market and additional services in Cotia, in the State of São Paulo.
An analysis of the territorial dynamics in which the market is inserted was carried out, outlining issues related to place, demographic profile and economic aspects of the location, including mobility and applicable legislation. A benchmarking study was also carried out with examples of similar markets in São Paulo, Brazil and other countries.
The result of the work was the definition of preliminary uses and operation programs and a first implementation proposal.
One of the partners in Natureza Urbana was the general coordinator of this study and other members of the team, then hired by IDOM, also participated.
The Municipal Market is inserted in a Strategic Development Area, destined to the implementation of urban projects that boost the economic and social development of the city.

The analysis of territorial dynamics was carried out at four different scales, from the macro scale of the metropolis to the scale of the building of the market. The synthesis of the analysis of these scales allowed the identification of opportunities such as the strategic location of the Market in relation to the existing mobility networks; location close to the city center and residential neighborhood; nearby relevant equipment, such as bus terminal, school, city hall, hospital and others; distinct flows and rhythms, due to the proximity to the Raposo Tavares Highway; a constructive potential not yet explored.
From the convergence of diagnostic stages and case studies of similar equipment, it was developed a study of scenarios and vocations for the area. It started from the concept of activities related to food, gastronomy and flower trade, more specifically roses, as potential anchor uses that may define the identity of the place.
Three deployment scenarios are suggested, with different programs to be implemented as additional uses to the market.
