Natural Retreat in Pipa
TIBAU DO SUL, RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
Hospitality experiences and integrative practices inspired by the local area
Located in Tibau do Sul (RN), between the municipal seat and the district of Pipa, the project proposes a conceptual master plan for a hospitality and integrative practices development situated in one of the most significant tourist destinations on the Brazilian coast. Surrounded by remnants of the Atlantic Forest, cliffs, beaches, and protected areas, the study area—covering approximately 1.7 hectares—is directly connected to the Pipa Ecological Sanctuary and key regional attractions such as Madeiro Beach, Dolphin Bay, and the Turtle Lookout.

From the outset, the goal was to understand how architecture could strengthen the relationship between visitors, the landscape, and nature. An analysis of the territory revealed a place defined by the convergence of different ecosystems, levels of use, and experiences: on one hand, beaches with extensive tourist infrastructure; on the other, more pristine areas, where time is shaped by the trails, the vegetation, and the views of the ocean.

This understanding guided a design process based on the integration of hospitality, environmental conservation, and immersive experiences. Rather than concentrating activities in a single building, the master plan organizes the development as a system of paths and discoveries, in which walking becomes part of the lodging experience itself.
The concept draws on the origin of the name Tibau— a word of Tupi origin meaning “between two waters” — to construct a spatial narrative inspired by the relationships between water, territory, and landscape. Two bodies of water, set among natural elements and recreational facilities, form the backbone of the project and are connected by a path that winds through clearings, vegetated areas, spaces for contemplation, and various experiences throughout the site. Inspired by the mandacaru, an emblematic species of the region, this path functions like its thorns: not to create barriers, but to guide, protect, and gradually reveal new places, views, and opportunities to linger.

The project’s various programs are distributed along this circuit. The integrative practices hub brings together spaces for yoga, meditation, workshops, and small events. The lodging units are designed as elevated cabins, integrated into the vegetation, with outdoor living and bathing areas that face the landscape. Between these hubs, a sequence of open spaces — decks, lookouts, art installations, contemplation areas, and nature trails — expands opportunities for interaction with the surroundings and transforms movement through the site into a sensory experience.
The design was developed based on the environmental characteristics of the site, respecting the topography, taking advantage of existing clearings, and minimizing interference with the vegetation. Located entirely within the Bonfim – Guaraíra Environmental Protection Area, the proposal incorporates current environmental and urban planning guidelines, adopting a low-impact strategy that enhances ecological connectivity and highlights the site’s natural attributes.

As a result, the study establishes a vision for the future of the site, defining spatial guidelines, program, layout, and conceptual language capable of guiding its phased development. Beyond the complex of buildings that house the main functions, the master plan proposes a way of inhabiting the landscape in which architecture, nature, and local culture coexist in an integrated manner, making hospitality a tool for conserving, revealing, and regenerating the territory.
